Besakih Temple
History
This temple originally built in a village called holy Hulundang Basukih, now known as Village Besakih. Besakih name taken from the word "Basuki" or in the codex is written as Basukir or Basukih. Basuki own words taken from the Sanskrit word "Wasuki" which means "savior".
Meanwhile, in the mythology Samudramanthana mentioned that Basuki is the name of the dragon circling Mount Mandara.
Stories mentioned that the ancient Pura Besakih built by the RSI Markandya and followers around the 11th century. At the time, RSI Markandya want to go to Mount Agung to build peristirahatan. However, the process of building suffered as a result of passing the followers of a disease. To save the RSI Markandya followers then create a place to worship God as a savior. Places of worship are called "Sanggar Basuki."

Pura Besakih located in the village of Besakih, Subdistrict Rendang, the Southwest-Mount Agung about 44 km from Arad and 62 km from Denpasar.
